Proposed Law: cameras on handicapped parking spots

MK Meirav Ben Ari (Kulanu) has proposed a law that would require the installation of cameras aimed at handicapped parking spots that will focus on the license plates of the car parked in the spot, in all public parking areas.

This will help the authorities identify people parking in these spots illegally and let them send fines and tickets to the offenders. This would be comparable to cameras placed throughout the grid of roads to catch people going through red lights and to catch people speeding, and other traffic violations. Hopefully, and the goal is that, this will also provide some deterrence and people will "naturally" not park in handicapped spots unless they have the permit to do so.

MK Ben Ari says that the number of disabled people in Israeli society has been increasing, while the number of parking spots designated for them is at a minimum. Ben Ari describes how she recently went to a mall and noticed the handicapped parking spots taken up mostly by non-handicapped-permitted vehicles, including motorcycles and cars with people waiting for people to come out.

Ben Ari thinks creating deterrence via cameras is the solution. People will think twice about using a handicapped spot if they know they are being filmed and will very likely receive a ticket in the mail.
