Olam Hafuch Ra'iti

I think we must be deep in the days of the Messiah...

Over the past few days and weeks I have seen (and read some of them) countless articles written by Dati Leumi rabbonim and lay people about how the Rabbanut is so bad, how it needs to be reformed or privatized, how the Rabbanut cannot be trusted, how the Rabbanut must be shut down.... Whether it was based on Riskin-gate or the conversion issues or kashrut issues or divorce and agunah issues, the Dati Leumi have recently been coming out en masse against the Rabbanut.

And, at the same time, over the same period, I have seen (and read some of them) countless articles from Haredi rabbonim and lay people coming out in defense of the Rabbanut,m explaining how they do such a fine job, how their role is so important, how they keep the State Jewish, how they are the only ones who can run the conversion issue in a proper manner, how the Rabbanut must be the authority on kashrut, etc.

To paraphrase Yosef, the son of Rabbi Yehoshua in Talmud Bava Basra, עולם הפוך ראיתי - I have seen an upside down (or backwards) world.

  2. The Rabbanuth is a necessary evil to prevent Jews from eating mamash treif and producing mamzerim, and from allowing Christians to sneak in the back door of Israeli citizenship with a false conversion, albeit some have definitely sneaked through.

With the likes of Tzohar and Bet Hillel, and some of the "local rabbis" controlling things, we would be in much worse shape.

    1. True. The Rabanut is the government agency to regulate religion not unlike how Misrad Hapnim handles citzenship and passports, and Bituach Leumi handles welfare. Not perfect, but destroying it would open the gates that would not be able to be closed.

We take it for granted today that virtually all factories and public catering is kosher but it was not like that over 20-30 years ago. We owe it to the rabanut that managed to create a standardized system and for promoting it.

The DLs are once again not 'getting it'. They have only five more years to nurture two gedolim that will be their candidates for Cheif Rabbi. If they do not wake up soon, the next chief rabbis will also be Haredim (not that I am disappointed with Rav Lau at all)

  3. How is it that in the USA they manage without a rabbanut? Is the food there not kosher? Do people not get married by a rabbi ,if they want to. They even get married without bringing pictues of their dead grandmothers Matzeva.I am as DL as you can get,but having been affiliated with the Kashrut community in Israel including various Badatzim I can honestly say KashruS and halacha have nothing to do with each other Here in Eretz Hakodesh (Unfortunately)
