Netanyahu overindulges in treif food

After PM Netanyahu's private dinner the other day with Sheldon Adelson, in which they were spotted eating in a treif restaurant, people were shocked and upset.

As if Netanyahu normally is known for keeping kosher. Some politicians you hear that about - they keep a kosher home, only eat kosher outside, etc. Netanyahu? I never heard it about him. Ok. He ate, they got upset. Life goes on.

Now it turns out that later the same day Netanyahu ate in another treif restaurant in a more official capacity, with Ambassador Ron Dermer and his wife, and with his Chief of Staff Ari Harow, and others.

Some people are outraged. Once can be written off as a mistake, maybe bad judgement. But twice?

I look at it a bit differently. How much can the guy eat? two fancy restaurants in one day???

And the second time was with religious people - what did Ron Dermer and Ari Harow eat? Netanyahu eating treif does not shock me, Dermer eating treif would.

I would give them the benefit of the doubt and suggest they were not eating shrimp or lobster or whatever else they serve in these upscale treif places. Maybe they had salad (and were obviously makpid to get it without onion), or maybe some sort of kosher fish. Who knows - maybe Netanyahu did as well, but then why go to such a treif restaurant just to eat the "less problematic" foods?

  1. unless they changed the rules, the rule is that the govt will not reimburse employees (expense account) for non kosher meals. (Israeli diplomats have to get their fellow diplomats to pay for such meals, or out of their own pocket.)

I presume mr adelson paid. as for amb dormer ????

    1. This is a ridiculous statement, and was never the case. There is no such rule for any government employee.

I assume Adelson paid in this case, in any event.

  2. Many fancy restaurants allow you to order kosher food in advance which they get from a caterer

    1. and many don't. esp when the caterer requires them to use his dishes / utensils, added cost and insult to the restaurant.

and many chefs forbid outside food; its an insult to the chef (if its chef owned, which many fancy restaurants are.)
