Most people rely on the Rabbanut kashrut

I am not sure what is new here, but a Supreme Court Justice just ruled that Rabbanut authorization of kashrut is perceived by the public as a form of "quality assurance" testifying to the kashrut of the product. In the eyes of most of the public, the judge said, the Rabbanut and those working on its behalf, is the body that is authorized to determine the kashrut of a product.

A decade ago a company was caught marketing a product as kosher for pesach, yet the product was discovered to contain possible chametz. A class action suit ended up on the side of the producer, but the people appealed to the Supreme Court, who decided to hear the case, and has now decided in favor of the litigants, as they had been duped.

considering that by law the Rabbanut is the only body authorized to certify kashrut, I am not sure why such a statement needed to be made. It seems the court differentiates between authorization and public perception. Even though they are authorized to certif kashrut, it does not necessarily mean the public perceives the Rabbanut logo and stamp as the final, official, word on the matter. The judge decided that the public perception is in line with that and the public sees Rabbanut and takes it as a given that the food is kosher.
